Memorial Day 2027 is Monday, May 31. Fairfax County Public Schools are closed, and the school year ends two weeks later, on Wednesday, June 16. Reston has no town government and no town parade; the main local observance is the patriotic concert at Reston Town Center on the Sunday of the holiday weekend. The 2027 events had not been announced when we checked in October, so the dates below are from 2026, when Memorial Day was May 25.

Ceremonies and events

A Star-Spangled Salute, Reston Town Center Pavilion. In 2026, The Reston Chorale and the Brass Band of Northern Virginia gave a free patriotic concert “honoring those who serve” in the Pavilion on Sunday, May 24, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., the town center’s calendar shows. Bring a lawn chair. Look for the 2027 date in the spring.

Reston Concerts on the Town. The town center’s free Saturday night concert series ran a Memorial Day weekend show on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 7:30 p.m., with Sip & Stroll drinks from nearby restaurants.

Free park access for service members. On Memorial Day 2026, the Park Authority gave veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families complimentary access to rec centers, including pools, fitness rooms and drop-in classes; camping at Lake Fairfax Park, 1400 Lake Fairfax Drive; and wagon rides at Frying Pan Farm Park for service members. Valid military ID was required. The program is sponsored by the Fairfax County Park Foundation; watch for the 2027 announcement in May.

Start of summer

Memorial Day weekend is when Reston’s outdoor water opens:

  • The Water Mine Family Swimmin’ Hole, Lake Fairfax Park, opened Saturday, May 23, 2026, the county said. Its discounted Gold Rush season pass sale ran through Memorial Day.
  • Reston Association pools open in phases from late spring, as weather and staffing allow, on the schedule RA publishes each April for its 15 pools.

If you are a veteran or in the military, bring your ID to a Park Authority rec center on Memorial Day. If you want a lawn spot for the town center concert, arrive early. And check pool opening dates in April, before the long weekend.
