Safety tips from the county and police

From Fairfax County’s guide and the Fairfax County Police Department’s Halloween safety release:

For families

  • Visit only homes with porch lights on or active Halloween decorations, and never go inside a stranger’s house or car.
  • Trick-or-treat in groups. If you are not going along, plan the route together.
  • Carry a flashlight or glow sticks, and choose costumes with reflective material and fire-retardant fabric. Face makeup is safer than a mask that blocks the eyes.
  • Cross at corners and crosswalks, not between parked cars, and stay on sidewalks and paths.
  • Make sure children know their phone number and address.
  • Check candy before it is eaten, especially for food allergies. A teal pumpkin signals allergy-friendly treats.

For drivers

  • Drive extra slowly through neighborhoods and residential areas on Halloween night.
  • Never pass a stopped vehicle that may be letting children cross.
  • Back out of driveways and parking spaces slowly, and put the phone away.

For homes and pets

  • Use glow sticks or battery candles in jack-o’-lanterns, and keep decorations away from heat sources and exits.
  • Clear power cords and other tripping hazards from the walk.
  • Keep pets leashed or behind a gate away from the door, keep chocolate away from them, and make sure they wear ID.
